Heli Mountaineering Courses in British Columbia’s Rocky Mountains!

Mountaineering in BC CanadaDay One of our heli mountaineering course, following a thrilling helicopter ride, covers harnesses, helmets and crampons: training on how to fit and wear each piece of equipment. Care and condition of climbing ropes is next, including stacking, coiling, potential rope damage from crampons, and mountaineering knots. A delicious lunch is followed by continuing adventures: how to walk and climb, plus different ice axe techniques. Setting up camp is quick and easy, and dinner is backcountry gourmet - delicious and filling.

Mountaineering in BC CanadaDay Two continues the mountaineering adventures, practicing crucial self-arrest techniques from every position imaginable and testing snow anchor strengths and weaknesses. After a satisfying lunch, the course turns to ice school training, learning to walk with crampons and practicing climbing techniques, plus ice anchor training.

Mountaineering in BC CanadaDay Three of our mountaineering course begins with glacier training - morphology and safety, from what makes a glacier to crossing it safely. You’ll start training on correct rope use for glacier travel, and crevasse rescue techniques. We lunch while checking out maps and compasses for the navigation training, spending the afternoon combining the skill sets learned so far to achieve route finding, even in white-out conditions (which we manufacture if nature doesn't cooperate!).

Mountaineering in BC CanadaDay Four works toward our planned mountaineering objective, with each participant taking turns leading the group and applying techniques appropriate to terrain and conditions: pacing, route finding, rope management on snow and mixed terrain, and white-out travel. Our expert guides provide feedback and support at all times during our mountaineering venture.

Mountaineering in BC CanadaDay Five of the mountaineering course finds us moving camp and once again putting our learned skills into mountaineering practice, enroute to Day Six's adventures - weather permitting, a peak to climb, with an accident and emergency training scenario along the way. Then it's back to camp and another great helicopter ride; we'll be sharing stories about that great simulated crevasse rescue you did, at the pub by five!

"Lynn and I had hoped for the adventure vacation of a lifetime...and Heli Canada Adventures exceeded even our wildest dreams. For four days we zipped into the mountains on a smooth, efficient helicopter ride and then tackled awesome challenges. Two amazing days of long, multi-pitch climbing provided us with the opportunity to apply rock skills in gorgeous alpine settings. Two fantastic days on a glacier allowed us to learn snow and ice techniques while crossing crevasses, moats and reaching un-named summits. Our guide was world class, a real professional, and we felt safe while learning new skills. Finally, Bob's friendly dedication to our needs made sure everything went smoothly. He warned us this would be addictive, and he was right. Well be back!"
